For most of us, when spring comes around we think of blooming flowers and longer days. When you are a pest control professional, spring marks the start of a busy season. We are gearing up to help you with all your springtime needs. This time of year pests are coming out of their winter hiding spots, mating and finding their way into our homes. One of the most costly and destructive of these invaders are termites.
Termites usually have one of 3 different roles to a colony. The workers maintain the colony, repair the nest and forage for food. Soldiers main role is to protect the colony from invaders and they are sterile. Neither workers or soldiers have wings. The termites with wings are the reproductives, or swarmers. In the spring, after the last freeze, usually around the time temperatures reach about 70 degrees, the swarmers emerge from their nests in large groups. The females release mating pheromones to attract the males. Once a suitable mate is found, they break off their wings (symbolizing that they are a couple) and they select a nesting location. They then mate and become the king and queen of the new colony. The queen has been known to live for 30 years or more!
Termites are very sneaky. They can survive unnoticed for years, growing their new founded colony to maturity at which time new swarmers emerge. Often swarmers, and the wings they shed, are the only indication of the colony hiding in your home. If you see swarmers you have had a colony hiding for years. You need to call a professional immediately to stop the damage from getting worse. If you see these pests, call All Star Pest Control today! 316.854.3096
