Adults are 3 to 4 mm long, may have red eyes or dark eyes with a tan thorax. They appear to be brown or tan in color.

They tend to build their populations during the summer months and become very abundant at harvest time. If they get indoors they are frequently active at all time of the year. They eat ripened fruits and vegetables and fermenting products.
