With warmer weather approaching we need to be aware of the pests that are lurking in our damp locations. In Wichita, Kansas we are prone to having Cellar Spiders. These spiders are located in damp locations like basements, crawl spaces, and cellars. Theses spiders have long legs and small bodies and are often confused with harvestmen, or better known as daddy longlegs.
There are two groups of Cellar Spiders, the long-bodied cellar spiders that have legs up to two inches long. Then the short-bodied cellar spiders whose legs are about ½ inch long. They are all either tan or gray in color.
Cellar Spiders hatch from eggs, when hatched they look like small adults who shed their skin to grow. The females encase their eggs in silk webs where they are protected against spider predators. Cellar Spiders are known best for infesting homes and warehouses. This is where they make their webs in protected corners of basements, closets, attics, outbuildings, and rock piles. They prefer to eat small moths, flies, mosquitos, and other insects or spiders that are found near their webs. Males and females can be found in climate- controlled structures year-round.
Even though their bites are harmless to humans, their webs are unsightly and profuse. Since Cellar Spiders tend to live close to one another this can cause some issues for us humans.
