The summer days are arriving here in Wichita, Kansas. Which means our lovely friends are back for the warm days. Bumblebees are large, fuzzy, and very hairy insects that are black and yellow colored or in some species orange and red. Depending on the species the size varies however, some can be over one-inch long. Bumblebees have a large structure on their hind legs known as a pollen basket that is often loaded with pollen collected by a foraging adult. Female bumblebees have a stinger unlike the males that just have a rounded abdomen.

Bumblebees usually build their nest in dry, protected and hidden cavities either below ground, on the ground, or close to the ground level. Typically, they are abandoned rodent tunnels. The bumblebee queen that has overwintered in a protected location constructs the nest in the early spring and begins the new bumblebee colony.

Bumblebee bests usually contain fewer members than honeybee nests and usually number from 50 to about 400 individuals. Depending on the species of bumblebee and their environmental conditions the population size will vary. The crazy thing is bumblebee workers only live for around a month and spend most of their life foraging for a plant nectar and pollen.

If you believe you have a bumblebee infestation a few ways to tell is if you see many bumblebees. Also, one might see bumblebee workers coming and going around the entrance into the nest site.
